Holme Cultram Abbey was founded for Cistercian monks in 1150, and, like Cartmel, retains the abbey church while the parish community center. Sadly, this massive sandstone church suffered a huge fire in 2006. It is still under restoration, but the disaster provides the opportunity for the West Cumbria Archaeological Society to excavate the lands to identify the original cloisters and also other features. Archaeological work continues this summer, thanks the grant among the Heritage Lottery Fund.

St. Catherine's, near Boot in Eskdale, is splendidly situated against the backdrop of Scafell Pike. It has had much renovation, but everyone in manner Lakes' barn style, with tiny windows and a coffee bell system. Its octagonal font is certainly very early, depicting St. Catherine's wheel and some church bell marigold decorations suggesting a late Roman or early Christian resource. Next morning the noisy packing of rucksacks dragged me from my insomnia. It was still dark yet a few of my fellow pilgrims had decided on the (very!) early start. I went outside with my steaming hot coffee and watched the sun rise regarding the towering peaks of the Pyrenees, a fantastic sight and well this early noise. Okay, so there were some good things about getting up early.
